Aural Window Interview

How did the band come together?

Matt: The band was already an established 4 piece before I joined, but really we’re just a group of inspired and enthusiastic musicians who have a common
goal in creating our own sound.

Sheena: Honestly I can’t imagine being in a band with anyone else but these guys.  You’d think after 4 years we’d hate each other’s guts by now but every tour just brings us closer  together.

You have toured in the US before. How did it compare to your touring in Australia?

Mike: For me, I think America having much more of a musical history in our genre, it was easier for us to integrate with bands there and attract new fans that we have met there.  A lot of bands in our genre come out of the USA so we felt real comfortable there.

Matt: The US atmosphere was very supportive and welcoming, perhaps even a little more nurturing than the local scene here in Melbourne! In spite of being 'outsiders' to the local clique the bands and crowds were receptive to our sound, even in a scene that is saturated with talent, there was nothing petty or competitive about how the bands interact with each other.

Do you think you've found the sound you want out of the band on your latest album or is it constantly evolving?

Matt: It’s always evolving. Completing a CD, or even just a song, is an expression of one particular sound that inspires the composer at that point in time. Personally I feel like each time we release a song it is then time to try something new, I don't like the idea of releasing songs that are too similar.

Mike: From our first EP to our newest one, there has been a very noticeable change on our sound and in the way we wrote new songs.  As we record and perform more it's only going to get better.

Whats your favorite song that you have written so far?

Matt: Personally I am quite a fan of Amber's First Kiss, since it is the song that probably stands closest to the next stage of our sound. I like the pace and flow of it, and it has a nice balance of clean tones and heavy rhythm work. Mike came up with some awesome beats too, it really brings the whole song to life.

Sheena: I’m really excited about some of our new songs that we’re working on.  But I really feel that we haven’t written our best song yet!  Though Ghost of Light would be a special one to me.  The lyrics for the entire song were done within 30 minutes and that’s a record for me!

What bands have you toured with that you really enjoyed?

Mike: A band from Las Vegas called The Darkest Day that we played a handful of shows with in Las Vegas not only a great musos but also great people.

Sheena: We didn’t even know they were on the bill, but some bands cancelled and they just rocked up with the awesomest attitude and went nuts on stage. Our impromptu collaboration for one of their new songs was hilarious.  I think we called ourselves “Aural Darkest Window Day”.  Hey, what happens in Vegas…

What is your ultimate goal with the band?

Mike: We love playing, writing and making new music and to entertain.  Would be nice if we can do this for a living.  Excessive luxury would be nice too.  But good music would come first and foremost.

Matt: To write some songs that will stay with people. I want to be a part of something unique and progressive, but still accessible and universally appreciated.

Sheena: After we played an all-age at Area 702 in Vegas, a father and his two-year-old daughter came over and bought our EP.  We signed it and made it out to Elliot whom I thought was the father’s name.  Turned out the little girl was Elliot and it was her first ever concert and he wanted her to have a souvenir.  So my ultimate goal with the band is to still be playing awesome music 10 years or 20 years from now that little Elliot would be proud to tell her friends that Aural Window was the first band she ever saw.

Favorite cds right now?

Matt: I’m in composition mode, so as always I keep Saosin's self-titled in the mix. Also listening to Secret & Whisper - Teenage Fantasy, The Blackout - The Best in Town, and I've been getting into The Getaway Plan - Other Voices, Other Rooms.

Mike: The new Temper Trap CD I love; new Soilwork and also the new Panic at the Disco.

Sheena: Going through a depressive noise-rock phase so The National’s High Violet, Glasvegas’s self-titled, and to balance that out I just downloaded the entire Lonely Island back catalog.
