A Brilliant Lie Interview

How long have you been together as a band and what brought you together?

-We’ve been together for about a year and a half. Besides a mutual love of beer, we each had a desire to develop a musical project from the ground up.

For those who haven't seen your video explanation, how did you come up with the name A Brilliant Lie?

-We had a lot of discussions focused on our attempts to identify the ways in which our life philosophies were paralleled, and how our philosophies influenced our music. We concluded that there is an intricate system of lies in our lives that we’re trying to escape from…most of which we tell ourselves rather than others. This is a topic that we found most intriguing as a group, and it influences the consistent tone of our music.

What's your view of music industry right now and where do you think your band fits into the picture?
-The music industry feels like it’s on the verge of a shift in rock music. It seems every decade or so a new band, or group of bands, comes around and shakes everything up, breaks the rules, and does something new. We all dream that we might be able to contribute to that in the future with our music because we think it’s challenging but fun, it’s catchy but it’s thought-provoking. Ideally, we'd be able to play music full-time...but we don't want to copy trends set by others in order to do so.

What are your goals for the band both long term and short term?

-A complete album is probably our most desired goal. After that, we’d like to get picked up by a larger band for a tour and then hopefully get signed to a decent label. We joke about that being the moment we can relax and stop working, but I think we all know that if we ever are faced with the opportunity to do nothing but play music that we will make the best of it and write some kick ass tunes.

Talk about what each of you bring to the table as a member of the band.

In songwriting…Typically- but not always - Tim writes source material that we all compose together as a group. Zach and Chris create a strong rhythm to each song based on our mutual composition. Then the song is ripped apart and put back together, sometimes more than once. Tara writes the lyrics and vocal melodies. Finally, the leads are written and we sometimes throw some harmonies on top. Other than that, we all work as a team to run the behind-the-scenes "business-side" of the band (promotions, radio work, networking, online presence, keeping our gear working, etc). Man...this band stuff is a full-time job and a half!

Favorite moment in your music career so far?

At our first show at the House of Blues in Orlando, a couple approached us at our merch table and told us they drove four hours to come see us play. They had never seen us before, and didn’t know us in any way - they simply came across our music online and liked what we did. It was one of the best feelings imaginable.

Favorite song for each of you to perform live?

Tim - "Magic Meltdown". It’s just so much fun to play.

Tara - "Lullabies For Open Eyes". Something about that song lifts my spirits and makes me smile - despite the fact that some of the content is a little depressing. Furthermore, it's super fun to play.

Zach - Wow that’s a tough one. I would have to go with “Lullabies For Open Eyes” as well. It’s just a high energy fun filled song that pumps me up when I play it…. right…

Chris – “Kitchen Light” – Because of the dynamics of the song. It sweeps the gambit of what we do musically in one shot.
