Interview with Irina Nicula Waddell of Ideal Zero

What first inspired you to take up music?

My father was a very talented musician, and I grew up in a musical environment, but I never really pursued anything musical myself until very recently. About 2 years

ago I bought a guitar and starting writing some songs, and just having fun with it. I didn't think much of it until I met Clint, our keyboard player. He saw something in me that I don't think I would have really discovered in myself right away. Now I am immersed in music, loving every moment of it, and exploring all the possibilities. I've always been very passionate about creative writing, and now I am able to use my love of the written word to strive to create something that is both thought provoking as well as emotionally expressive.

Where did the name Ideal Zero come from?

Ideal zero is a reference to John Galt's speech in the book Atlas Shrugged written by Ayn Rand. It is a statement on a doctrine of morality in which the "ideal" is a world without mind, a world where everything is sacrificed, and that's obviously a morality that we want to question, and want to make light of, so that others may begin to question it as well. Many of our songs revolve around Ayn Rand's philosophies. We want to get people thinking, and we believe that self-reliance is a good thing to spread a message about.

Describe the song writing process for your band.

Initially we would all just get together and start playing, either things we had been working on by ourselves, or things that just pop into our heads that day. From there, everyone would just go with the flow. Then we would record the basic structure of the song and play around with it. I think now we are taking a slightly different approach. A few of us have our own small recording set-ups in our homes. We record ideas, e-mail them to one another, and build upon that. It makes it easier! You can record whenever the inspiration hits, and it's quick and simple to send it off to the other members.

What bands can you see yourself playing with in the future?

Lacuna Coil, Evanescence, Kings of Leon, Seether, Flyleaf.

Whats the best part about playing live?

The energy! Getting people to join you on a emotional journey is an indescribable thing. I believe having numerous people united in one way of thinking or feeling, for example feeling positive and inspired by a particular song, can truly affect all of us in a great way.

What is the ultimate goal for you with Ideal Zero?

I have dreams like anyone else starting out in music. I'd like to one day reach and impact numerous people, make a living doing what I love, inspire people...but that is not the ultimate goal. Whether I ever accomplish anything like that or not, I will feel successful so long as I keep making music that I am proud of and that I love listening to!
